FERTILIZATION AND TURF CARE ALTERNATIVES
There are many alternative methods to traditional pesticide and herbicide applications, which can contribute to the well being of your landscape. While broad spectrum treatments have their place in landscaping, it makes sense to us to apply to each landscape the correct treatment for its needs, based on scientific analysis.
We provide a soil testing service that produces an accurate view of individual soil characteristics, and a detailed map for bringing them into optimum health. While this may sound expensive, it is actually not the case. In fact, it is almost always more expensive not to! Our soil testing service starts at about $40 an acre.
Would you go to a natural food store, and buy every vitamin and trace mineral, and gobble mouthfuls of them, just in case you MAY need some of those nutrients? Furthermore, would you begin taking a course of antibiotics, in case you MAY have a virus? Of course not, but the landscape industry too many times takes the brute force approach to fertilization, at your expense. It costs a lot of money to constantly apply fertilizer, and that fertilizer may be causing harm! Too much of a given nutrient can be detrimental. For instance, nitrogen makes plants grow vigorously, but too much burns them out.
Some soils genuinely are of poor health in a uniform manner, and can benefit from broad spectrum fertilizers. Many soils however, have quite a bit of health and vigor going for them already, and simply need adjustment of their PH, or amendments of specific nutrients.
Applying the correct nutrients for the needs of YOUR particular landscape is far cheaper many times, because you are only paying for what is actually needed.
Your landscape will thrive if it gets exactly what it needs.
We gather our soil samples from clearly defined areas, so that we can get a composite sketch of areas that need to be addressed. These samples are then sent in to labs which analyze it. The labs return to us a highly specific analysis which can then be transformed into a blueprint for treatment.
We feel that our program of treatment is cost competitive to nearly all traditional fertilization services, and in many cases cheaper. Additionally, you can rest assured that the treatments are effective and safe. You will never have to worry about your pets, children, and other family members being exposed to toxicity after an application, or about drifting on windy days.
We have researched a wide variety of treatment options for your landscape, and upon getting an overview of your needs will furnish you with a comprehensive proposal for treatment, including printed information about specific products if you wish.
Please let us know if you would like to further discuss your options for fertilization and pest control with us. We provide free consultations and estimates, and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your needs.
Sincerely,
Austin Reida, Co-Owner of BLM Contracting, LLC
OVERSEEDING OF TURF AREAS
At BLM Contracting, we offer a variety of turf care services, including aeration, dethatching, and organic and natural applications of nutrients for fertilization. While all of these treatments are effective, and emphatically recommended, you may also want to consider overseeding of your turf.
Overseeding is done very frequently on athletic fields, high traffic areas, as well as in private and public areas where we want the turf to be as healthy and vigorous as it can be. An overseeded lawn in good health is one with lots of young growth, resulting in lush and green grass. Essentially, we are planting a new lawn where your old one still exists.
Overseeding is the process of sowing seed in an area where there is already turf growing. Because the existing turf is already rooted, we cannot roto-till or deeply cultivate the soil when overseeding. In turn, we also need to make sure that there is excellent seed to soil contact in order to achieve good germination rates. Simply broadcasting seed over your existing turf is a poor choice, as most of the seed will not germinate. Therefore, we use specialized overseeding equipment. This equipment essentially slices and scarifies the soil beneath the existing turf to a specified depth, and sows the seed mechanically in the small furrows that are created.
Some landscaping companies use alternative techniques, and incorrect equipment to do the job, at lesser rates of effectiveness. Some of these companies also use FAR lower ratios of seed than what is optimum, and bill you for the service. We use a ratio which we find to be ideal to create excellent results. This is usually 5-7 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft., which translates into quite a bit of seed! Make sure that if you are paying for this service, it is being done correctly. Proper overseeding is not an inexpensive service, and if you choose to have it done, you want to make sure the job is done professionally, and that you are truly getting the value you deserve for your money.
In order for the process of overseeding to achieve successful results, we need water. Without dependable and adequate watering, overseeding is not a good bet. All of the careful labor, seed, and expense, has a likelihood of being an exercise in futility if we do not nurture the seeds and seedlings created by this process. Seeds and young shoots are highly vulnerable during their initial stages of development, and require constant observation and care. If you are considering overseeding, and are unsure about watering requirements, or your ability to provide adequate water in the area you intend to overseed, please call us for a free consultation.
In summary, overseeding can be an effective process with stunning results if done correctly.
Let us know if you would like more information about overseeding, or would like additional information about our other turf and landscape treatments and services.
Sincerely,
Austin Reida, Co-Owner of BLM Contracting, LLC
